02 November 2017 - Xylose and xylobiose-based ionic liquids

Ionic Liquids are compounds of importance due to their potential applications in various fields such as catalysis, synthetic chemistry, electrochemistry, solubilization and transformation of biopolymers,…

A wide variety of combinations of cations and anions is possible to form liquid ionics allows refining their physico-chemical properties (melting temperature, viscosity, density, hydrophobicity, solubility…) for well-chosen applications. The synthesis of greener ionic liquids from renewable ressources gains more and more attention. A collaborative work between ICMR and FARE laboratories led to the synthesis of original xylose and xylobiose-based liquid ionic produced with combined enzymatic and chemical approaches. These salts displayed interesting properties as ionic liquids. Their structures have been correlated to their thermal properties (melting, glass transition and decomposition temperatures).
