29 September 2017 - Launch event of the Interreg Valbran project

The launch event of the Interreg Valbran project, carried out by FARE and the AFERE chair was organized on September 26th 2017. More than 70 people (French and Belgian journalists, scientists, industrials, political representatives) attended the event, which was organized on the Biowanze industrial site, the leader in the production of 1st generation bioethanol in Belgium.

The objective was to communicate about the Valbran Interreg project and also to establish relationships between the partners of the Valbran project and the people and institutions present. During this event, Caroline Rémond leader of the project presented Valbran, André Tonneaux, director of Biowanze presented Biowanze’s activities and Olivier Henroz (Walagri) presented an overview of wheat (production, flow, prices, ...) with a focus for France and Belgium. A visit of the Biowanze industrial site was organized for the participants of the event.

Wheat bran is an abundant agricultural co-product derived from milling and biorefinery processes and mainly used for feed application. The objective of ValBran is to develop new ways to valorize wheat bran into high added values molecules. The aim is to produce surfactant molecules, which can be used in applications such as detergency, cosmetics, phytosanitary agents or food additives. Technologies for the transformation of wheat bran into surfactant molecules developed during the project will be environmentally friendly white biotechnology processes.

Valbran will strengthen cross-border cooperation between the 4 regions involved in the project: Grand Est and Hauts de France in France and Wallonia and West Vlaanderen Province in Belgium. The 9 partners of the project (University of Reims Champagne Ardenne, Picardie Jules Verne University, University of Liège, VITO, INAGRO, VALBIO, IAR, GREENWIN and CATALISTI) combine their skills and know-how to carry out this project and to position themselves as major players in the bio-economy sector.
