Development of a ligninolytic biocathode

A ligninolytic air-breathing biocathode was designed with a single hybrid catalytic interface built on the surface of a gas diffusion electrode

A ligninolytic air-breathing biocathode was designed with a single hybrid catalytic interface built on the surface of a gas diffusion electrode. This device synergistically combines an electrocatalyst and the lignin peroxidase H8 from Phanerochaete chrysosporium confined on a single surface electrode, all operating under ambient conditions and with molecular oxygen from air. The use of this all-in-one air-breathing biocathode provides a valuable insight into the development of bioelectrochemical-based technology applied to the lignin biorefineries.
