The CANETE project : start of the first field campaign at the Xylosylve forestry site in France

Launched in February 2024, the CANETE project successfully kicked off field sampling in the first week of April 2025. The sampling team of the FARE lab, Pascal Thiébeau and Pierre Verjans, sampled soil and forest litters on the Pierroton forestry platform in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine area in france, with the help of a team of 5 on-site colleagues.

The CANETE project studies the use of carbon and nitrogen by soil microorganisms in field crop, grassland and forest ecosystems in France. This first Xylsosylve sample site makes it possible to study intensive wood and woody biomass production systems under oceanic climatic conditions on podzolized sandy soils. Soil surface layers from two treatments were sampled for physical, biogeochemical and microbiological analyses. Colleagues from the ISPA Soil-Plant-Atmosphere Interactions Unit, in particular Laurent Augusto, Nicolas Fanin and Pierre Trichet, the platform's scientific manager, helped Pierre and Pascal.

The in natura sampling campaign is scheduled to continue for 9 weeks: it will keep Pierre and Pascal busy until the end of May. They will then go to the long-term observation and experimentation system for environmental research (SOERE) sites on Agroecosystems, Biogeochemical Cycles and Biodiversity (ACBB): the Lusignan site with crops alternating with temporary grasslands, the Estrées-Mons site with field crops, and the Theix and Laqueuille sites with permanent grasslands. Two field crop sites will also be selected for study: the Qualiagro site of the SOERE Residual Organic Products (PRO) in Feucherolles and the CA-SYS agroecology experiment platform site at Epoisses. A forest site on the Breuil-Chenue experimental site on the biogeochemistry of forest ecosystems and a final agroforestry site on the Agro-TCR “short rotation coppice” system at La Bouzule will follow.

Three of these sites will also be sampled in autumn and at the end of winter 2025/2026.
